Four South American countries account for just under half the world’s coffee. On the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service forecast for 2026/27, Brazil produces 71.9 million 60-kg bags, Colombia 13.4 million, Peru 4.78 million and Ecuador 0.35 million — 90.4 million of a world total of 189.7 million bags, or 47.7 per cent. Brazil alone is “nearly 40 percent of world production” in the FAS’s own words. What separates the four is less a flavour chart than a set of structural facts: Brazil is a plateau crop harvested by machine on a two-year cycle, Colombia is mountain arabica picked by hand, Peru is the origin that grew while Brazil’s arabica faltered, and Ecuador is small enough to sit in the rounding.

What an earlier version of this page got wrong
It described the same four countries twice. This is the one page on this site with genuine duplication inside itself. A section headed “Coffee Varieties in South America” gave a paragraph each to Brazil, Colombia and Peru and a table row to Ecuador; a later section headed “Major Coffee Producing Countries in South America” gave a paragraph each to Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador saying the same things in near-identical wording. Both blocks ended with the same summary sentence about a “rich tapestry of flavors”. One of the two has been removed, and the country coverage below is written once.
The article summed itself up twice. A closing-style paragraph sat in the middle of the piece, followed by three more sections and then an actual closing section that said much the same thing again. Both are gone.
The flavour table was not sourced and is not reproduced. It assigned Brazil “nutty, sweet, chocolatey”, Colombia “full-bodied, caramel sweetness”, Peru “vanilla-nut sweetness” and Ecuador “bright acidity, fruity to floral”, with body and acidity ratings for each. Nobody at this site has cupped coffee from any of the four. A whole country does not have one cup profile in any case — Brazil alone spans two species, four processing methods and a dozen producing regions, and a single row of adjectives cannot describe that.
The climate section had the physiology backwards. It said the continent “is blessed with a hot and humid climate, which is ideal for coffee cultivation”. Arabica is not a hot-climate plant — it wants a cool mean annual temperature of roughly 18 °C, which is why the crop climbs. The Amazon was credited with growing the coffee. The page said the rainforest “provides a rich and fertile soil” and a “shade canopy” for South American coffee. The USDA describes Brazil’s arabica quite differently: it is “cultivated on elevated plateaus and rolling hills with relatively uniform weather patterns, rather than mountainous microclimates that are typical of other producing countries”. Peru does farm coffee on the Amazon slope of the Andes; the Amazon basin itself is not where this continent’s coffee comes from.
One outbound link was stale. The page linked ncausa.org/About-Coffee/Coffee-Around-the-World, which now 301s to aboutcoffee.org. The National Coffee Association moved its consumer material to that domain.

The marketing-year column matters more than it looks: a “2026 harvest” means different months in each country, and comparing a Brazilian July-June year against a Colombian October-September year is comparing different calendars.
Brazil: scale, machines and a two-year rhythm
Brazil is the only one of the four that grows both species at scale — 47.5 million bags of arabica and 24.4 million of robusta in the 2026/27 forecast. The FAS attributes the country’s biennial swing to its terrain: “Extreme weather events such as frost, heat, or drought tend to synchronize yields across large areas by forcing trees into an off-year. Brazil’s geography also supports mechanized pruning and harvesting, further harmonizing output.” Because those swings are large enough to move world supply, the agency treats weather in Minas Gerais as “the primary indicator for world market conditions”.

Colombia: arabica only, and October to September
The old page said Colombian coffee “is exclusively Arabica”. That one holds up against the data, and it is checkable in two lines of the same table: the FAS puts Colombian arabica production at 13,400 thousand bags for 2026/27 and Colombian total production at 13,400 thousand bags. The two figures are identical, so the published crop is entirely arabica. For 2026/27 the FAS expects output to rise 900,000 bags “on adequate soil moisture from last year’s excessive rains and increased utilization of inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides”, with bean exports up 500,000 bags to 12.2 million, “mostly to the United States and European Union”.
Colombia is also the country whose numbers get revised most. The FAS lowered its 2025/26 estimate by 1.3 million bags “due to excessive rain and cloud cover that lowered yields”, and raised Colombia’s own bean imports by 1.3 million bags “to maintain domestic consumption levels on reduced domestic output”. A large exporter importing coffee to drink is not a contradiction; it is what happens when the export grade is worth more abroad than at home.
Peru: the origin that grew into the gap
Peru is the most interesting recent story on the continent and the old page gave it a sentence about “vanilla-nut sweetness”. Here is the substance instead. After five years of weak arabica harvests in Brazil, the FAS records that “output in countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico, and Peru increased to fill the global supply gap. However, these gains did not fully compensate for Brazil’s losses.” Peru’s 2025/26 estimate was revised up by nearly 600,000 bags to 4.8 million on higher yields — the largest upward revision of any producer in that round apart from Vietnam.
Peru’s marketing year begins in April, the same as Ecuador, Bolivia and Indonesia. That is why Peruvian coffee often reaches roasters on a different rhythm from Colombian coffee despite the countries sharing a border.
Ecuador: small, and worth stating plainly
Ecuador is forecast at 350,000 bags for 2026/27 — about half of one per cent of Brazil’s crop, and small enough that the FAS does not break it out in the separate arabica and robusta tables. The old page said Ecuador’s “unique location on the equator allows for a year-round growing season, resulting in a consistent supply of coffee beans”. Its output has in fact ranged from 260,000 to 370,000 bags across the six years in the table above, which is a swing of over 40 per cent. Ecuador does grow both species, and it is one of the few countries where coffee can be harvested at some altitude in most months; that is not the same as a consistent national supply.
A note on grades, since South American beans are sold by them
Green coffee from every origin on this page is bought and sold against grade names, and those names describe screen size and defect counts, not how the coffee tastes. A larger screen number means a larger bean; it does not mean a better cup, and a small-bean grade is not a low-quality grade. Species names are worth getting right too, because they appear on bags. Robusta is Coffea canephora — see our robusta page — and the liberica group was split into three species by Davis and colleagues in 2025, with excelsa now correctly C. dewevrei. Neither is grown commercially in South America at any scale that appears in the FAS tables.
