Barrett’s Coffee feels like the kind of Austin coffee shop that keeps things simple in the best way. They roast and serve their own coffees in Austin and pair that with convenient to-go ordering, local snacks and pastries, and breakfast tacos, which gives the shop a relaxed neighborhood feel rather than anything overly polished or trendy. They also offer walk-up service and easy pickup, which fits that low-fuss, everyday coffee shop vibe really well.
When we visited Barrett’s Coffee, we came away impressed by both the quality of the coffee and the easy, approachable atmosphere. It feels like the kind of place where you can stop in for a quick caffeine run or stay a little while without feeling rushed.

The coffee at Barrett’s
For our drinks, we ordered an espresso made with their Ethiopian beans and a drip coffee featuring their Timor beans, and both were delicious. The espresso was smooth, bright, and flavorful without being harsh, while the drip coffee was mellow, balanced, and incredibly easy to drink. Together, they showed a nice range. They also have fun blends for purchase like That 90s Blend and St. Lucifer’s, plus bottomless drip, which adds to the appeal for regulars.
One thing we appreciated most about Barrett’s is that the coffee felt intentional without feeling pretentious. Everything tasted clean, polished, and well-prepared, which is exactly what you want from a neighborhood spot you’d happily return to.
Catering and events
Barrett’s also offers catering and event service, which makes it feel even more versatile beyond the café itself. They offer delivery or pickup for larger groups with options like cold brew, drip coffee, hot chocolate, and seltzer, and their baristas are also available for in-person espresso bar service.
What’s changed since our visit
Still open at 713 W St. John’s Ave, 7am–7pm every day.
- The Timor has gone; the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is still around. A drip lineup turns over faster than anything else in a shop, so check the board when you get there.
- The bottomless drip was offered at the counter that day, not a standing policy. Worth asking about.
